Questions

PrEP and prevention, answered

What people ask us about prevention at the counter, answered the way we answer there.

Does insurance cover PrEP?

Most plans cover PrEP with no cost sharing, because federal preventive-care rules require it. For people without coverage, New York's PrEP Assistance Program covers the visits and labs, and manufacturer programs cover the medication itself. Bring your card, or bring nothing, and the counter walks through the options.

Can a pharmacist give me PEP in New York?

Yes. New York lets a pharmacist dispense a seven-day PEP starter pack under a standing order, and this pharmacy holds one. Come to the counter during pharmacy hours, or call the New York City PEP hotline at (844) 373-7692 at any hour and they can call a prescription in.

Can I buy syringes over the counter in New York?

Yes. Under New York's Expanded Syringe Access Program, adults 18 and over can buy up to ten syringes over the counter, and this pharmacy participates.

Where do I dispose of used needles?

Bring your filled sharps container to the counter; we take them back. Under New York's safe sharps law, every hospital and nursing home in the state accepts household sharps too.

How do I start PrEP without a regular doctor?

Sexual health clinics and telehealth services start PrEP with a single visit and some lab work. Ask at the counter or call (212) 328-4111 and we point you to the nearest starting point, then handle the fills from there.

A valid prescription is required.
