How to pay for PrEP in New York
Almost everyone in New York can get PrEP with little or nothing out of pocket. The routes differ by coverage, and the counter walks any of them with you.
With private insurance
Federal preventive-care rules require most private plans to cover PrEP without cost sharing, and New York enforces them. For most commercially insured people the medication and the associated visits come to nothing out of pocket.
If a plan asks for prior authorization, the pharmacy handles the paperwork with the prescriber.
With Medicaid
PrEP is part of New York Medicaid's pharmacy benefit. Managed-care members can fill at any pharmacy in their plan's network, and this pharmacy participates in New York plans; bring your card and the counter checks in a minute.
Without insurance
New York's PrEP Assistance Program, called PrEP-AP, covers the clinical visits and lab work that PrEP requires for people without coverage.
The medication itself is covered separately through manufacturer assistance programs, which most people without insurance qualify for. The counter helps with both applications.
