Safe sharps disposal in NYC

Used needles, syringes and lancets never belong loose in the trash. New York gives you several easy ways to get rid of them safely, including this counter.

The rules, briefly

New York requires used sharps to travel in a rigid, puncture-resistant, sealed container. A purpose-made sharps container is best; state guidance also accepts a heavy plastic bottle, like a laundry detergent bottle, taped shut and labeled.

Where to take them

This pharmacy takes back filled sharps containers at the counter, and sells replacement containers on the shelf.

Under New York's Expanded Syringe Access Program, participating pharmacies collect used syringes, and every hospital and nursing home in the state must accept household sharps for disposal under the safe sharps law.

  • This counter, during pharmacy hours
  • Hospitals and nursing homes statewide, at no charge
  • City kiosks and take-back events listed by the health department

Getting syringes in the first place

Under the same state program, adults 18 and over can buy up to ten syringes over the counter at a participating pharmacy, and this pharmacy is one.
